The day begins with an early departure from Marrakech, heading toward the Ourika Valley, one of the most accessible and scenic foothills of the High Atlas Mountains. Along the route, participants stop at several viewpoints to observe stratified rock layers, gently rolling river valleys, and the complex interplay of erosion and sedimentation that shapes the foothill landscape.
The geological features are clearly visible even without strenuous hiking, making this an ideal introduction to mountain geology. By late morning, the group arrives in traditional Berber villages, where guides explain how local communities have adapted to the rugged terrain over centuries, including their agricultural practices, terraced fields, and vernacular architecture that uses local stone. Travelers can walk through narrow streets, interact with residents, and gain insights into the relationship between human settlement and geology. In the afternoon, the journey continues toward Imlil, visiting additional small villages nestled among the lower mountain slopes.
